NASHVILLE EDUCATORS FILE ETHICS COMPLAINT IN RESPONSE TO ATTACK FROM SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER

(Nashville, TN, January 25th, 2021) The Metropolitan Nashville Education Association has submitted an ethics complaint to the MNPS School District Ethics Committee in response to a barrage of attacks by MNPS District six Board Chair Fran Bush on a Facebook post. The attack by Ms. Bush was directed at teachers expressing concerns for their safety.

"Debate and differences of opinion are not the issue here,” said MNEA President Amanda Kail. “I understand that the union and school board members aren’t going to agree on everything. The reason we are filing the complaint is based on how Ms. Bush chose to express her opinions. Going on to the personal Facebook page of the MNEA president and telling teachers to ‘shut up’, calling them ‘liars’ and ‘an embarrassment’ and then telling them they should quit if they don’t agree with her is a violation of board ethics.”

The complaint reads “Ms. Bush has willingly and knowingly violated the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Education Boardsmanship Code of Ethics (1.2021), specifically in reference to Article III, Section 3 which states, “I will not criticize employees publicly but will make such criticism to the director of schools for investigation and action if necessary.”

The complaint then lists 13 quotes from Ms. Bush taken from her posts on the Facebook page directed at MNPS teachers.

Kail adds, “MNEA remains committed to working together with all local stakeholders to ensure we have safe learning and working conditions for students, staff, and families.”
