Know Your Rights: You Don't Have to Face It Alone

As a TEA member, you have the right to union representation during any meeting that you reasonably believe could result in disciplinary action. Whether it's a reprimand, improvement plan, suspension, or termination, you have the right to request a TEA representative before the meeting begins. This important protection, known as Weingarten Rights, has been upheld by Tennessee courts and helps ensure that educators have a voice and an advocate throughout the process. If you're ever asked to attend an investigatory meeting, stop, ask if the meeting could lead to discipline, and request your TEA representative. Knowing your rights is the first step in protecting your career.
