The
Metropolitan Nashville Education Association (MNEA)
was chartered in April of 1964. MNEA
was formed upon the dissolution of the Education Council of Nashville,
which was founded in 1959. MNEA
was formed as the united education association representing all teachers
in Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County Schools upon the merger of
the city and county schools. Prior to MNEA
the Education Council was actually an umbrella organization formed by the
four teacher associations in Nashville and Davidson County. The
Education Council represented one of the first unification efforts of
segregated teacher associations in the South.
The Education Council of Nashville and administrative
representatives met and conferred on terms of employment and working
conditions in Metro prior to the merger. Those discussions later
evolved into one of the first attempts at collective bargaining for
teachers in the state of Tennessee. When the Education Professional
Negotiations Act was passed in 1978, MNEA
was one of four teacher unions bargaining in Tennessee.
Today . . .
Metro's public school teachers, principals, administrators
and other certificated personnel are eligible to hold membership in the
United Education Profession (UEP) which is composed of the National
Education Association (NEA), the Tennessee Education Association
(TEA) and the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association (MNEA).
We combine the resources of NEA, TEA, and MNEA
to:
·
Negotiate the employment rights and compensation for all
Metro educators.
·
Represent educators in employment-related matters.
·
Represent educators to insure that their rights are protected
in personnel matters.
·
Represent the views of educators to politicians on the local,
state and national levels.
·
Support public education and the students in our schools.
·
Provide staff development to ensure the highest quality
ongoing education to teachers.
MNEA is at the forefront of education reform. Through
collaborations with the Metro school system and the community we help to
provide the highest level of education to ALL of Metro's children and
adults.
The Peer Assistance, Leadership and Support Program
(PALS) is a joint MNEA /Metro Schools initiative. Under this program, a
cadre of outstanding classroom teachers is released to work with other
teachers on a full-time basis to improve instruction and mentor new
teachers.
